v0.2.5 – Movement Updates (change destination while moving)

This patch brings a major update to the ship movement system designed to enable more dynamic behaviour in combat situations while also providing greater convenience when moving around the galaxy by adding the ability to change where your ship is moving to while it is in motion. That’s right you no longer have to wait until you come to a complete stop before issuing a new movement command.
Full details below, please note there are a couple of limitations we are still working to remove.

Changes

  • Added the ability to set a new destination using the system explorer and/or hex command menu while already moving. A new route will be plotted utilising both thrusters and the main drive at the same time to transition from one target destination to another in a curved path.
  • When the current ship velocity prohibits stopping at the new destination the ship will move past and then come back eventually reaching the target.
  • When it is not possible to plot a new route the ship will continue on the current trajectory.

Fixes

  • Fixed bug where moves using positional thrusters (short moves) would sometimes cause rubber banding.

Limitations and Known Issues (fixing coming in a future patch)

  • Currently not possible to set a new destination while in the “flip” phase of movement.
  • Setting a new destination while is the “deceleration” phase can caused the ship angle to jump about but the ship will be on the right path.
  • Setting a new destination that is close the current position (within 20SU) and at an angle greater than 60 degrees can cause an unnatural abrupt heading change.
  • There is sometimes a visual jump in position when both thrusters and main drives are activated at the same time.
  • Sometimes when setting a new destination while in the “alignment” phase (as a result of setting a new destination) the ship position will jump then correct itself.

Other Notable Updates

  • Enabled basic formatting for text in mail messages. Support for *bold*, _italic_, and ~strikethrough~ text has been implemented.
